Week of Prayer for North American Missions

2013AAEO_ADTheme: Whatever It Takes…Reaching the One

Scripture: Acts 8:26-31 (HCSB)

26An angel of the Lord spoke to Philip: ‘Get up and go south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’27So he got up and went. There was an Ethiopian man, a eunuch and high official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to worship in Jerusalem 28and was sitting in his chariot on his way home, reading the prophet Isaiah aloud. 29The Spirit told Philip, ‘Go and join that chariot.’30When Philip ran up to it, he heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, ‘Do you understand what you’re reading?’ 31‘How can I,’ he said, ‘unless someone guides me?’ So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.”

Goal: $70 million

Dates: March 3-10, 2013

This year, six people representing thousands of missionaries serving throughout the United States, Canada and their territories are spotlighted. The other two days focus on ways Southern Baptists are reaching the lost in North America.

Day 1: Scott and Ashley Venable, Chicago, Illinois
Scott is a church planting missionary and pastor of Mosaic Church. Scott and Ashley moved to Chicago in 2010. Nine months later, Mosaic Church held its first Sunday worship gathering and is doing whatever it takes to reach unchurched people of the Wicker Park area.

Day 2: Lorna Bius, West Region
Lorna is the LoveLoud West Region Catalyst and works with churches in 13 western states to help them discover creative ways to reach out to neglected neighbors, communities and children.

Day 3: Peter and Irene Yanes, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Peter is church planting missionary for Ethnic churches in Greater Philadelphia. Peter helps start churches and mentors new church planters as they seek to preach the gospel to all nations coming to the Philadelphia area.

Day 4: Kay Bennett, New Orleans, Louisiana
Kay is director of the Baptist Friendship House in New Orleans, which ministers to homeless women and children in the community. Her desire is for women to have their physical needs of shelter and food met while at the same time, seeing them come to know Jesus as their Savior.

Day 5: Ben and Shauna Pilgreen, San Francisco, California
Ben is a church planting missionary starting a thriving church in downtown San Francisco. They are reaching people from more than 30 countries, and have started 13 small groups in their first year.

Day 6: Victor and Candice Thomas, Vancouver, British Columbia
Victor is pastor of The Point, which initially started as a university church and has grown to reach the surrounding communities in Burnaby, Coquitlam and Vancouver.

Day 7: Short-term missions with a long-term impact
Through summer and semester opportunities, young men and women are discovering future areas of service as they work alongside and learn from experienced church planters and missionaries.

Day 8: Reaching your “one”
Being obedient to God’s call of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ, who is the “one” God is calling you to share with today?
