One in Christ – One in Prayer

Weekly Prayer Devotion

“All things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer—” (Matthew 21:22).

Rev. D. C. Mangum was the first to make contact with Brother “M”!

He learned to like Rev. D. C., and finally to trust him. He helped around the church from time to time. The church struggled back then, and Bro. “M” felt needed and welcome. He was a native of Mississippi, his wife was from Georgia. Neither of them had much formal education and were suspicious of others.

Rev. Mangum retired and I was called as Pastor in 1986. The congregation consisted of twenty-two members including my wife. Bro. “M” could not give up his liquor–it amounted to one pint of whiskey per day!

Mrs. “M” began a season of daily prayer that God would deliver her husband from his bondage to alcohol. She never relented! She prayed for many months: in fact, she became one of our most faithful “prayer warriors.” She was faithful in every way: women’s ministry, nursing home ministry, and attended every church service. Always, she kept up her intercession for her husband!

One Sunday God answered! Bro. “M” came forward, gave his heart and life to Jesus Christ, was baptized, and never drank again! What a glorious prayer answer! What a victory! God promised, and God answered! Bro. “M” said he suddenly lost his desire for the whiskey he had craved for so long! And he knew his wife had prayed the addiction out of him!

There’s more! He also smoked! After his “alcohol deliverance,” he would slip around and attempt to hide his smoking habit. Some asked him, why? He told us! “I’m afraid my wife will see me: she’ll begin praying for me, and God will make me quit that too!”

Both these dear souls are in heaven today. And both are witnesses to the power of God’s promise –

“And all things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing —

— ye shall receive!” (Matthew 21:22)

God Bless You,

Dr. B. L. Worsham

Pray to Stop Human Trafficking in our State and Beyond

Interstate 10 has been named by the FBI as the #1 corridor for human trafficking in the United States. Ask God to intervene as we intercede for the issues concerning human trafficking in our state and beyond both coasts. The WMU’s Project Help: Exploitation endeavors to teach church members how to recognize and actively work to abolish human trafficking. All SJBA churches are encouraged to be involved in this prayer initiative. Pray on the 10th of every month at 10 am and 10 pm for I-10.
